TDIU Pay Rates 2026 (Individual Unemployability)
TDIU allows veterans rated at 70%+ combined (with at least one condition at 40%+) — or a single condition at 60%+ — to receive compensation at the 100% rate if they cannot maintain substantially gainful employment due to their service-connected disabilities. It is one of the most important benefits available to veterans who can no longer work because of their service-connected conditions.
TDIU Eligibility Requirements
- One service-connected condition rated at 60% or higher; or
- A combined rating of 70% or higher with at least one condition rated at 40% or higher.
- Unable to maintain substantially gainful employment because of service-connected disabilities.
- Marginal employment (earning below the federal poverty threshold) does not disqualify you.
- Filed using VA Form 21-8940, with supporting medical and employment evidence.
2026 VA Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA)
VA disability compensation is adjusted every year through a Cost of Living Adjustment, or COLA. The VA applies the same percentage increase set by the Social Security Administration, so when Social Security benefits rise, VA disability rates rise by the same amount. The 2026 rates on this page reflect the adjustment effective December 1, 2025, which appears in payments beginning in January 2026.
This annual increase is designed to help your compensation keep pace with inflation, so the real value of your benefit does not erode over time. VA disability payments are tax-free federal benefits — they are not taxed at the federal or state level and do not need to be reported as income.
